Meet our European Best Startup – Social Impact

Winning the 2016 Talent Unleashed Award in Europe for Best Start Up – Social Impact, Arthur Kay of bio-bean speaks about his business, how they started and how it felt to win at the EU awards.

bio-bean® Limited is a UK-based clean technology company, the first in the world to industrialise the process of recycling waste coffee grounds into advanced bio-fuels, displacing conventional fuels and chemicals in the process. bio-beans’ world-first coffee waste recycling factory in Cambridgeshire recycles 1 in 10 cups of UK coffee.

Tell us a little about bio bean.

I founded the company in 2014, bio-bean owns and operates the worlds’ first coffee waste recycling factory with capacity to process 50,000 tonnes of waste coffee grounds a year. The bio-bean team is made up of 25 passionate biochemical engineers, mad scientists and eco-warriors. bio-bean works in partnership with pioneering R&D, green energy and waste management companies. bio-bean aims to transform 10% of the UK’s coffee waste – 50,000 tonnes – into advanced biofuels this year.

What made you start the business?

A few years ago, I was designing a coffee shop, when I noticed the huge amount of coffee grounds that go to waste and end up in landfill. I learned that coffee grounds have a high oil content and came up with a crazy idea – what if coffee waste could be used to power our cities, buildings and even our cars? Where others saw waste, I saw an opportunity and set about turning this vision into a reality.

 What about your success to date.

bio-bean has grown from a bright idea to a pioneering clean technology company in just three years. Recent success includes:

  • 2  x  Innovate UK grants
  • Building the world’s first waste coffee recycling factory
  • Providing 25 green jobs and growing a fantastic team
  • Recycling tens of thousands of tonnes of waste coffee
  • bio-bean CEO Arthur Kay was named the Guardian
  • Fellow and Forbes ’30 under 3o’ Entrepreneur

How did it feel to win at the European Awards?

Winning the talent unleashed awards feels fantastic. Hugely unexpected and a great endorsement for bio-bean and the whole team as well.
